Community Issues

Crime Prevention through community engagement

"Community safety is everyone’s responsibility and crime prevention is everyone’s business."

This statement truly reflects the understanding that strategic partnerships working diligently towards a community – based shared responsibility can prevent crime.

The intention of such a plan is to create safe communities, from the corporate sector right down to the local neighbourhood level, by empowering the community to play an active role in crime reduction initiatives.

The Community Issues Unit, represents the Crime Prevention Section by liaising with all OPP Regions on initiatives that are of a community concern.

Responsibilities of the Community Issues Unit

The Crime Prevention Section, Community Issues Unit works with other government agencies as well as Regional Community Policing Coordinators and Community Services Coordinators in the development and distribution of new initiatives that are designed to enhance relationships between the police and the community. The unit supports the ongoing evaluation of crime prevention activities and takes a lead role in the coordination of large programs such as: Cottage Watch, Lock It or Lose It, etc., to ensure that the delivery of these programs is consistent throughout the province.  The unit also reviews information on the most recent crime prevention strategies and programs and ensures that this information is shared with all OPP regions.
