Criminal Investigations
The Criminal
Investigation Branch is found within Criminal Investigation Services of the
Investigation and Support Bureau, Investigations and Organized Crime Command.
The C.I.B. is responsible for the investigation of homicides, attempt murders,
kidnappings, extradition proceedings, and other major criminal investigations
within OPP jurisdiction. Investigators within the C.I.B. also provide major
case management and specialized investigative expertise for other serious
criminal investigations as assigned by the Senior Command of the OPP. The
C.I.B. provides investigative services to assist Municipal Police Services on
the direction of the Solicitor General, request from the Crown Attorney, or at
the request of the Municipal Police Service. C.I.B. also has a standing
agreement with the Royal Newfoundland Constabulatory to assist them when
requested for any major criminal investigation.
The C.I.B. is mandated under the Coroner’s Act to provide assistance to the
Coroner in investigating deaths or inquests.
The Kingston Penitentiary Inquest Unit manages
investigations for the Office of the Chief Coroner regarding in-custody death
inquests in Ontario
penitentiaries. The Provincial Inquest Coordinator monitors and coordinates
inquests throughout the province and provides investigative support and
training to investigators and coroner’s constables.
The C.I.B. Penitentiary Squad is responsible for investigating major criminal
incidents within Federal Penitentiaries in Eastern Ontario.
The Squad is a partnership made up of OPP, Kingston Police Service and RCMP
investigators.
The C.I.B. Risk Offender Enforcement Unit (R.O.E.) is dedicated to providing
quality investigation, enforcement and monitoring of high-risk offenders upon
release. The R.O.E. unit helps to ensure that those who are
released into the community are effectively monitored. The R.O.E
Unit’s specialized service is available to all Police Agencies in Ontario.
