Welcome to our East Region Internet site. East Region encompasses an area from the City of Quinte West to the Quebec border in the southern end, north along the Ottawa River to an area between Rolphton and Mattawa, includes all of Algonquin Park and stretches to Bancroft again in the west. It is a mix of municipal and rural policing with 8 major municipalities, many rural villages and farming communities, along with sparsely populated parks and undeveloped wilderness. The area is diverse both in geography and its population.
Due to the demographical challenges within East Region, we need to be prepared to respond to a vast assortment of occurrences from homicides, break and enters, thefts, and assaults in the criminal investigation area to traffic collisions, marine incidents, lost persons and major events. We also routinely assist the City of Ottawa with major events such as the NATO conference, the Presidential visit and other international conventions.
We have 992 uniform personnel and 145 civilian personnel in East Region. The strength of our region is in our front line policing constables at the community level. Everyone else in the region, including myself, are here in support of their function. Excellent support is provided by clerical staff at the detachment and regional level, our professional auxiliary policing partners and our regional support staff. We have identified specialists in the traffic and criminal investigation areas to provide excellence in policing. Several officers are also committed, on a part-time basis, to our Emergency Response Team. The OPP Provincial Communication Centre located in Smiths Falls has greatly enhanced our communications and officer safety.
