Mental Health/Vulnerable Persons UnitOne in five people in Ontario will experience a mental illness at some point in their lifetime. Mental illness affects people of all ages, in all kinds of jobs and at all educational levels. The OPP recognizes these facts and, in an effort to respond to increased occurrences of mental health issues, has introduced a Provincial Coordinator to liaise with other government agencies; police services; Ministries and community groups in order to develop both a training program and a comprehensive response strategy in dealing with mental health issues.
A key component to the training is eliminating the social stigma attached to mental illness and sharing information on mental illness myths that have been sensationalized by the media and general fears of the unknown.
