“Friends of The OPP Museum” Mission
- “Friends of The OPP Museum”, a non-profit, volunteer organization, supports and promotes The OPP Museum. The OPP Museum is dedicated to preserving and celebrating the heritage of the OPP.
What does “Friends of The OPP Museum” do?
- “Friends of The OPP Museum” is dedicated to supporting and promoting The OPP Museum, helping it to achieve its long term goals and financial stability.
- “Friends of The OPP Museum” supports the preservation of collections, research initiatives, programming, and exhibits that celebrate the OPP’s heritage.
- “Friends of The OPP Museum” is particularly committed to engaging communities throughout the province and beyond through outreach programming, and exhibition initiatives.
How old are the Friends?
“Friends of The OPP Museum” was incorporated on March 14, 2008, and officially launched May 22nd, 2008 at General Headquarters in Orillia. In December 2008, then Commissioner, Julian Fantino, and Friends President, Dorothy Duncan, formally signed a cooperating association agreement.
Friends Board of Directors:
The 9 member Board meets on a monthly basis. The 3 standing Committees (Executive; Finance & Audit; Nominating) and 4 Special Committees (Outreach and Membership Services; Fundraising; Finance and Administration; Communications) carry out the Board’s main work. Any member of Friends can volunteer to serve on any of these Board Committees.
The Current 2010/11 Board :
Doug Cole, President; Pat Bromley, Vice – President; Sandra Stanton, Secretary; Terry Hehn, Treasurer. Directors: Len Aitchison; Norm Feaver; Ted McCollum; Angie McCollum; Dave Truax. OPP Representative: Nancy Merriman; Honorary Director: Chris Johnstone (Acting Curator). Honorary Chair: OPP Commissioner Chris D. Lewis.
How do Friends help The OPP Museum?
- Provide speakers to various community, heritage and police services groups, locally and around the Province. Over the past year, 6 such presentations were made.
- Assist with special OPP Museum events, exhibits and public information sessions/tables. In 2010, Friends attended 12 such undertakings.
- Assist with various writing and research projects. Eg. “ MUSH !! Dining on the go in early Northern Ontario”, by Dorothy Duncan
- Cooperate with other Museums and Tourism groups for display and public awareness purposes.
- Holding various fundraising events and projects in support of The OPP Museum.
- Support The OPP Museum with applications for awards and grants
- Purchasing promotional items and materials that help to spread the word about The OPP Museum
How your membership helps!
Currently we have over 100 paid up members who are helping to preserve a special part of Ontario’s heritage by:
- Supporting the development of outreach programs, such as speakers, newsletters and high quality traveling exhibits, so the OPP’s past can be shared throughout the province
- Raising finances through special events, donations and projects that in turn assist The OPP Museum with collections, exhibits and artifacts
- Promoting cultural and educational activities to increase public awareness of the importance of The OPP Museum and its special heritage story
- Supporting the museum in its goals to be a viable and recognized part of provincial heritage & tourism networks
- Getting involved with people from around the province dedicated to recognizing the heritage of the OPP
- Helping establish a solid base of financial support
